What a day & What's new Monday

What a day. Once again, I spent multiple days looking at my Cornell status only to find nothing changed. I don't even bother looking at my Tuck status since they roll out the announcements all at once anyway.

Taxes are on my mind these days. I've just finished receiving everything that I'll need to do my taxes. How are we expected to turn in our taxes when we don't even get all our info until now? I've been using TurboTax since I first started doing my taxes back in 1990. I always get refund checks and I've never been audited. Oh crap... did I just jinx myself?

Today, my Tivo took a dive. I woke up this morning to find that the hard drive died. No sound at all. A while back, I had upgraded the capacity on this thing, but after a year, one of the hard drives died because I didn't have enough ventilation. So I went back to the original drive.

Normally, you can upgrade by using the existing drive along with some Linux utilities to swap the drives for larger ones. But in this case, with the drive dead I found a company called ptvupgrade that provided a downloadable configuration disk that not only allowed me to take a spare hard drive and create a new Tivo Hard Disk, but I was able to expand it to a seond disk. Total cost, $20. The Linux utility route, although free, took me 11 hours when I upgraded in the past. With this utility, I performed everything in 15 minutes. I've gone from 20 hrs of recording capacity to 180 hrs now. Went from a single 40 GB hard drive to a 120 GB primary and 80 GB slave.

Yeah yeah, I know I void the warranty on the Tivo by doing this. Since the unit is 2 1/2 yrs past the 1 yr warranty time, does it really matter. Secondly, the Tivo website has a forum called "the underground" that points to web sites that show you how to tinker with the Tivo....

So Dave, what did you do with all the time you saved? I spent it cleaning the house. Duh!

I've been thinking about GMAT prep and with all the feedback about the Mlicets GMAT company, I'm still confused. I've not received one bad comment about them. On the other hand, Kaplan and Princeton Review get all kinds of bad reviews. At least that's what people have been saying via private e-mail after I posted a request for info about Mlicets

For now, it's Veritas as a favorite followed by Mlicets and then GMAX Online

[Update -7/11/2006- MLICETS has used my comment out of context. I do not have verifiable data or feedback to show MLICETS as a good or bad GMAT company. I currently don't recommend them over Veritas Prep, Manhattan GMAT, GMAX Online or even my own study guide. I did not give permission for my comment.]
Oh by the way, my opinion about this web site hacking thing with the MBA admissions software is that:
1) It's not hacking because nothing was changed nor was anything damaged.
2) The hacking label is clearly used incorrectly. Here's why I think so... This whole thing should have been branded, "MBA applicants find security loophole in admissions online software" THAT should have been the story. Not MBA applicants! The media should have ripped into the software company. It's like this.... When Microsoft is found to have another security loophole in it's Operating System, is the person who took advantage of the security hole the story? No way, it's Microsoft. Consequently, this admissions software story is absolutely turned on it's head. HEY MEDIA!!! Your pointing your fingers in the wrong direction!!

By the way, I'm changing my What's new section to include only info that affects the infrastructure of a school or the overall Business Application process. There was just too much info to follow and too little time in my life to cover it all. The two stories below are in fact significant to know about which is why I include them here.

========== What's New ==========
Berkeley-HAAS - Dean Lyons Sets Ambitious Strategic Goals and Directions for Haas School" Dean Rich Lyons said one of his top priorities is to increase the amount of revenue for the school obtained through gift giving by alumni and other donors, and to increase fundraising awareness among the entire Haas community. He also listed three additional strategic directions, including enhancing career services for students, increasing the size of the faculty, and expanding the size of the Full-Time MBA Program in the future.

New score codes for GMAT next year The Graduate Management Admission Test, the must-cross hurdle for aspiring B-school students will now have a new score-recipient code, specific to a programme instead of an institution.

I didn't have success with MLICETs,
I could not understand the instructors thick accent.

MLICETS review material was thorough I thought, but that's not worth the cost. Being pdf files, it should be cheaper. The service I received was terrible. The "telephonic reviews" never came when promised, and sometimes not at all. The instructor, Sonny, was unapologetic, and even became angry and insulting when I politely but firmly expressed my dissatisfaction with the service. It was ridiculous--he was calling me names, etc. I did some research, and it turns out he's the "president" of the company. I had to track down the email of the executive board to ask for their assistance with his attacks. Only after I found them did he sort-of apologize, but still blamed me. Below are excerpts--word for word--from some of his emails to me. Judge for yourselves.
o Do you have a split personality or something or the 060606 had something to do with your behavior?
o We did provide you with excellent training materials and tried to be patient with you in scheduling telephonic review sessions. We cannot be any more heroic than that. (I agreed the material was good, but if heroic means “not calling once in 12 days or giving me even a time frame in which to expect a call”, I believe there’s a problem.)
o But when we come across some unreasonable persons such as you are turning out to be, we will not subscribe to the saw that a customer is always right even though he is totally wrong. (I had simply asked for an apology).
o This is a copy of one of my “unreasonable” emails (the tone was intended as one of frustration, not anger):
 “Okay, I'm already a bit frustrated. We discussed the importance of working steadily for the next few weeks, how time was important. You said it was very important that I be able to focus and work for the next couple weeks. You said you'd send me materials immediately, which I logically took to mean last night or first thing this morning. However, it's 12:45 pm, and I see nothing. I'm not seeing much respect for my time or my needs or the fact that I paid for this service. I can't check my email all day long hoping that MLICETS will send me something. I need to be able to plan my GMAT work around other responsibilities, but the lack of follow-through and organization over there is making that difficult. This is very poor customer service. Please make an effort to remedy that.”

o Do not waste your energy on silly ranting and negative thoughts.
o Please work on the files sent to you again, and keep a good attitude. No apologies are due. If anything, you should apologize for your unreasonable ranting in your message.
o Looks like you are lacking in critical reasoning.
o The subject line of one of his emails to me was “Rantings.”

There is only one instructor for this course. He runs the same course all over the US and is a one man band. His teaching skills are abyssmal and his attitude is extremely unprofessional, rude, abusive and he gets very insulting and personal. His explanations and course structure is appauling for the amount you pay. Sign up for the online course and study the materials by yourself, you won't do any better by sitting in his class and listening to his muttering-literally. He said there are 17 instructors for this course. ITS a LIE there is only one..HIM. APPAULING communication skills and total disregard for the fact that YOU PAID HIM to teach you.
