Security and What's New Monday Part II

Not too long ago, I installed Norton's Internet Security software on my laptop and workstation. Now, I don't see any of the Amazon Book links on my Blog. Solution: Went to blogger.com forums and found out that the ad blocker of Norton's Internet Security is the problem. Stop it from blocking web page ad's and they'll return.

However, if I change the Amazon book links to text link, then everything is ok. I guess it has something to do with the graphics.

By the way, I've been meaning to write up a security blog entry for awhile now.
The internet has become a security nightmare even though you may just scan Business Week, Yahoo and the Wall Street Journal.

There are 3 security threats we all need to be aware of. They are
1) Viruses
2) Adware
3) Spyware

Norton Anti-Virus or Symantec Anti-Virus only takes care of Viruses, Trojan horses and worms. Norton Internet Security does do some adware blocking, but I find that it doesn't work very well.

(For Microsoft Windows only)
The program I suggest for Adware is Ad-Aware SE (It's free and does an ok job.) You can download it at CNET. Run this program once a week. It only removes what's getting installed. The program will prompt you for updates if the definitions get outdated.

(For Microsoft Windows only)
For spyware I suggest Spybot. I suggest that you download it and run it once a week as well. There is an update option for the definitions of this program as well

Both Spybot and Ad-Aware don't prevent spyware and adware, they can only remove them once they are there. You'll be surprised to find that no matter how safely you think you're surfing the internet that you are still getting hit.

(For Microsoft Windows only)
The program that should prove helpful in this regard is Microsoft's Antispyware program. It's free as long as you have a legit Operating System license. I suggest you download it immediately and let it do it's thing. It actively blocks spyware and adware from getting installed.

This program from Microsoft was just released and I've been running it for about a week now. I haven't had the time to thorougly check if the Microsoft program catches everything that Ad-Aware and Spybot catch. I hope so because then I won't have to run them like I have been for the last 6 months every week.

The last thing for security purposes that you need to install are security patches from Microsoft, Apple or Linux depending on your operating system. For Microsoft, go to http://g.msn.com/mh_mshp/11

A few well known studies by PC Magazine and other prominent testing companies show that there is not one single product on the market that will catch everything. In other words, there isn't one Anti-Spyware program that will catch all the spyware. This goes for Adware as well. You'll be happy to know that Microsoft purchased the best Anti-spyware program from a company that was already doing a good job. It's not perfect, but it's the best of the bunch. And the fact that we now get it for free during its' beta test period is very good news.

All this may sound like computer geek talk. However, no matter what you think, you really need to be educated on this stuff. If your computer is noticably slower, it's because of spyware and adware. 4 months ago, I cleaned up my friends computers at his Veterinary clinic. His computer had over 1800 spyware programs installed and was as slow as a dog. He thought it was because the computer was getting old. Computer's don't slow down with age except if there is somthing wrong. The other problem that I hate about spyware is how they take over my web homepage or search options. I want my home page to be yahoo or msn and spyware or adware will change it to their sponsered company search web pages without me knowing it. These programs are insidious.

Take my word for it, install these programs today and run a full diagnostic. If the diagnostic takes more than an hour, you better believe that your computer was in bad shape and that you really need this clean up. The results will blow you away.
