Big News - HBS Admissions get's hacked & What's New Thursday

What a total fiasco. I've been following this throughout the day and the details about what happened are now clear. It became so bad in fact that HBS elected to release a public announcement as to what happened.

Initially, PowerYogi wrote in his Blog about the Business Week craziness about how certain postings were getting deleted that were associated with a step-by-step do it yourself hack to find out your HBS admissions status now instead of waiting another month.

Later, Graham at ClearAdmit clarified why the hack could have taken place and clarified the technology behind the HBS admissions system. In short, this meant that schools like Stanford, MIT were possibly open for a similiar type of attack. Heck, I can just imagine the office at HBS today. It must have been an absolute mad house. Phone calls to Business Week, to the software vendor and to IT support. Can you just picture the meetings with Dewey? What a terrible day it must have been. You better believe that this got outside of HBS and into the main Harvard campus. Imagine the de-briefs to the Harvard University board members and etc.

What an absolute embarrasement!

In the Business Week Forums, HBS posted the following statement.
The mission of Harvard Business School is to educate leaders who make a difference in the world. We aspire to achieve this mission in all our activities, and our admissions process reflects our commitment to the highest standards of integrity.

Earlier today, we sent the following e-mail to all applicants currently in the admissions process:

We understand that some users of ApplyYourself, the on-line application and decision notification system we employ, have inappropriately attempted to access decision information about their own applications before the specified notification date. We take this abuse of the ApplyYourself system very seriously. Such behavior is unethical and inconsistent with the behavior we expect from high-potential leaders we seek to admit to our program. We want to assure all applicants, however, that:

HBS decision information housed within ApplyYourself is neither complete nor final until our application notification dates. The application information that all applicants and recommenders submitted to us has been, and continues to be secure.
We appreciate your interest in Harvard Business School, and we want to underscore to all our applicants our commitment to make and communicate our admissions decisions in the most rigorous, fair, and secure fashion.

Sincerely,

Brit K. Dewey, Managing Director of MBA Admissions & Financial Aid
Harvard Business School

A few hours ago, HBS released this press release through the Crimson Newspaper. Hacker Tips Off B-School Applicants Students could check on admissions status a month early

Tipped off by an online hacker, applicants to several of the nation’s top business schools, including Harvard Business School (HBS), could access internal files on the schools’ websites and ascertain their admissions status a month early.
The admissions websites were vulnerable for over nine hours yesterday before the hacker’s instructions and the admissions letters were taken down.

But during the narrow time window, according to a thread on Business Week Online’s technology forum, several applicants managed to follow the hacker’s directions and read the admissions office’s response letter.

HBS requires students to submit their applications and recommendations electronically using ApplyYourself, an online application and decision notification system.

An anonymous hacker known as “brookbond,” who defined himself as a male who specializes in information technology and software security, posted the instructions on Business Week Online’s technology forum at 12:15 a.m., early yesterday.

As of a few hours ago, the one who figured out the hack posted this on PowerYogi's Blog.

"I doubt what i did was unethical. it was just a URL THEY had provided on their page. I do security analysis and I know when its wrong to enter the systems and when its right. But then, its HBS and they have a right to suppress free speech. Thanks yogi for keeping this alive."

========== What's New - MBA Related ==========
HBS - Dmitry Mironenko of the Moscow Times writes this article about a 1967 HBS graduate and his life experiences. "Many people who know Vitaly Ozira think that he was born with luck on his side." "What matters in life is what you know, who you know and having luck," said Ozira, who graduated from Harvard Business School in 1967 -- the first Russian to do so -- and is now acting head of the management department at Moscow International University. "I can say that I am quite a lucky person."

Stanford - Helen Chang writes this article titled, "MBA Student Study Trips Draw Lessons from Seven Nations". In case, you're not aware, this event was the reason why several Stanford GSB students were in Asia at the time of the Tsunami. Thinking that they could take some vacation time after their meetings, they toured in regions that happened to be in the path of the Tsunami. One GSB student was killed and the other woman made it out alive. Although, she did suffer some major cuts on her leg. In fact, I saw her on the news not too long ago where she described her experience of being trapped under some debris. Unable to come up for air and unable to break free she began to swallow water and gave up her fight. To her surprise, another surge of water came and released her leg. She somehow came to the surface of the water and clung to a tree. What an experience. Anyway, below are the details of the full details of this Stanford GSB project.

Each year, Business School MBA students organize and conduct roughly a half-dozen study trips that offer students a brief but intensive learning experience somewhere in the world. During December 2004, student groups visited Brazil, China, Italy, Japan, Russia, and Singapore/Thailand. Another study trip will visit Washington, D.C., later this year.
