Definition of "Can Do" Case Study - What's New Tuesday Part II

So there's this guy in my Accounting class that I've been able to get to know more with each passing class. I'll call him J. J is hispanic and is about 30 years old. He works part time at UPS and has spent the last 3 years trying to complete his Business undergraduate degree. The problem is that his GPA is at a probationary level. He tells me that he has a 130 IQ and is frustrated by his lack luster performance and really wants to get on with his life. He's sick and tired of seeing people around him who he thinks are dumb or make dumb decisions. He shared with me that he wanted to be a part of the action and not be one of the irrelevant laborers. (J's words, not mine)

So I started to help him. I motivate him regularly, give him tips on what to study for, and I follow up with him on his progress. I've several hour long talks with him as he shares more about his inner insecurities. He's more frustrated by the fact that it will probably take him 3 more years to finish his degree.

I applaude his long term goal, but to be honest it's a lackluster effort by his own confession and he doesn't seem to know why. He brought up weird notions of possibly being bi-polar or depressed. In hearing his life story, I can tell you that's it's neither. The answer is that he doesn't pay attention to his self-esteem which causes depressive states of anxiety and fears of failure. The second layer of his problem is that he's not hungry. I mean REALLY hungry to make an impact in the world. For J, he is just getting by. I shared this with him and he emphatically agreed.

Now, you have to picture J before drawing your own conclusions. He's big and stocky and the first impression you get from him is that he is angry at the world and ready for a brawl on a moments notice. I have no doubt that he would kick the tail off of anyone that would dare get in his way. He likes to wear dark clothes and almost always wears a brown knit ski cap.

My conclusions were drawn from several actions that he either did or didn't do and he was surprised to hear such honest and bang-on words. He asked me if I believed in fate. I told him up to a certain point, yes. He said that he believed running into me was fate. Now, I'm not sharing this story to highlight anything about myself. Rather, I want to highlight a couple of things about high performing individuals. J's story forces one to ask the question, "what does it take to move from under-performance to high-performance" I propose these 3 key things.

1) Self-Esteem is incredibly important to high-performing individuals. High Self-Esteem will drive one to do things you should even though you don't feel like it. I'm not putting this in the same category as selfishnessl.

2) You have to be absolutely hungry to do well. The kind of hungry that will's you to get over the difficult humps.

3) You have to see your life purpose in a context of something more than just yourself. That is, there has to be a larger vision or picture that is beyond yourself that you are a part of or want to be a part of.

In contrast to J, this past summer, I spent more time with D who was pretty much in the same difficult situation of probationary GPA levels, struggling with self-doubt and battling insecurities that prevented him from moving from the "I don't know if I can" mind set to the "I can" mind set. In helping him to start to succeed with a few small things in studying and utlimately helping him to get a solid A in the class, D is a classic case of finally seeing 1,2 and 3 and doing fantastically in his life.

Yes, his father almost died from Cancer this past quarter and Yes, he's the only child, but for the last quarter and a half of school, he's been getting the top scores on the tests and sometimes the highest score and he is has built a momentum to do well in school and pursue his dream to be a doctor.

I don't know if you watch "Inside the Actors Studio". Anyway, during the interviews, famous actors provide a response to one question that always resonates with me. James Lipton, the host, asks the Actor/Actress, "What word do you hate?". And the answer I hear most often from well respected actors is " Can't ".

I really like that answer a lot!

I'm hoping J will move to the "Can do" mentality. He's got the brains. I hope he will get hungry soon. I'm hoping that J will see that being hungry means finding out what it takes to get things done and then pro-actively doing it on a consistant basis. It's a shame to see someone waste their potential.

MBA Life - Moin Kazi relates how his choice of MBA courses helped him to win a risk analyst job at the gas utility and what a typical day is like. After graduating from HEC Montreal in September of 2004, I felt prepared to make the career switch that I had carefully planned -- from private banking to the energy sector. I secured a position at Enbridge Gas Distribution as a risk-management analysis supervisor.
