My plans with GMAT& a bit about Duke and Tuck& CAT MBA

I just got off the phone with Veritas. My GMAT class starts on Monday. I know that my Tuck decision just came out, but I must say that I'm actually relieved to have found out. Now I can stop holding my breath. I have been putting so many of my plans on hold during the wait time.

My life was on hold because as many of us applicants know.. we either plan make vacation plans, get on with life or make reapplication plans. Knowing the decision outcome allows me to move forward with some sort of substantial planning.

I don't plan on applying to any other schools during this application period unless my GMAT score goes way up.

I'm doing well in my Accounting class. In fact, I have the highest score in the class. I have the Final on Tuesday. I only need a 70% or higher on the test to get a solid "A" in the class. I'm signing up for Accounting II. The class starts on April 4th.

Tuck Accepts Peeping Tom's/Tina's
This announcement came out yesterday. I meant to comment on it, but Linda at beat me to the punch. Anyway, Tuck announced that they interviewed every single applicant whom they were considering accepting into the school. That's great. The interesting point made by all the applicants interviewed was that the reason they peeked was because they were "curious". They should have sent Tuck a copy of a " Curious George " book, signed it and wrote ," this is me " on the cover. j/k.

So I guess Stanford and Tuck were the only schools that gave the applicants an opportunity to explain themselves whereas Duke, Carnegie Mellon, Harvard, and MIT wrote the applicants off as rejects outright.

A friend of mine was accepted to Duke-Fuqua in R1. Duke-Fuqua has always been off my radar. So I decided to take an in depth look at this North Carolina School . Although I learned a lot about the school, there were some things that I wanted to comment on. Just as a preamble, Duke's core leadership and program has undergone some major changes over the last few years.

1) The Dean of Duke (main) University, Richard Brodhead, came from Yale in 2004. The previous Dean went onto a European school. Brodhead is a 40 year Yale Veteran.

2) Ray Smith was appointed the Associate Dean for Executive Education at Fuqua this past week. Keeping reading to see why I think this is significant.

3) Douglas Breeden who has been the Fuqua Dean since 2001 was given a second five-year term starting this year. I know this isn't a change in leadership. It's just interesting to note that whatever Breeden is doing... the board likes it.

4)Since Breeden's been on the job, Fuqua's ranking has gone from 5 to 9 (2002), then from 9 to 11 (2004). They really like what he's doing? Ok. I'll be interested to see the B-Week results in 2006.

I must say though that for a school to roam around in the 5-10 range is really not that big a deal.

I went on and compiled what the rankings said about Duke as well.

I forgot to add it, but Duke was #7 in 2003 for US News World and Report.

5) In 2003, the school went from a class size of 345 to 405. That's quite a lot for a school that size. Why? Money. The Executive program had lost a lot of students in its' Global Executive MBA program. So they had to do something on the daytime program to bring in more revenue to increase revenue stream and so that they could afford to bring on more faculty. By the way, the Executive MBA program costs $100,000/year at Fuqua. Ouch! (Source Article) Hmm... perhaps that's why Ray Smith was brought on-board. They need the money and for the executive program to do a lot better job on their recruiting.

On my last note. My wife and I have always differed on our preference of pets. Although we don't have dog's or cat's, my wife is clearly a cat person and I'm a dog person. Cat's are given way too much credit for their intelligence in my opinion. I think Cat's are just way better at self preservation and so they appear to be more opinionated. Moreover, have you ever seen a well trained cat? Yeah, neither have I. Cat's don't aim to please either. They aim to be pleased.

Now that you know my opinion about cat's, you'll have to indulge my chatter regarding a situation out of Texas recently. An unaccredited school called Trinity Southern University was caught recently making quick money selling MBA diplomas. If you ever run into someone who says they have an MBA, it might be a good idea to make sure they didn't get it from this school.

It's basically a mail order company where you send in the check and get an MBA diploma a week later. The cost is $398 by the way.

Now here's the funny thing. The state of Pennsylvania recently sued these guys recently for giving an MBA to a cat. Yes a cat. Uh, Pennsylvania won and now these guys have to pay $115,000.

Now, if I had a cat with an MBA, I think I would be pretty intimidated. But first, I would have strolled that cat through Wharton with a little sign around it's neck saying. "MBA, yeah.. got one" :)
