What a day
I recieved such encouragement today from respondants to my previous two posts. It really helped.A new thing I'd like to start is a question a week survey of MBA applicant specific questions. It'll be one question a week for 5 weeks. I'll post the results on Saturday with a subsequent question change following the posting. I would keep the older surveys available for additional data input however. Anyway, I thought it would help many of us wondering about trends in application and how it could help us understand the application process and thoughts of others in a more centrally measured way.

So here's the first question
What Business Schools will you be applying to this year?
I made some adjustments to my studying habbits. I took more seriously the nature of quality vs quantity and tried to calm myself down when I didn't make thorough time to review concepts that I wasn't 100% sure about. There's that side of me that says... Ah I get it. I misread it or I was not focused. If it was one of these reasons, I made a different kind of error log where I noted the difference that the language or particular way in which the question was asked. For example, when a PS question is an algebraic one and the term "is an integer" is not seen in the question... then immediately consider fractions as possible options especially when it's a variable question. Another one is when a work problem is asking for an answer in terms of time vs amount of task can be completed. This makes the formula upside down. Anyway, this is my way of fixing my lack of focus error margin. For the concepts, I seem shaky on, I'm taking more time on the concept of the question and the permutation of the question. For example, I'm asking myself, "Now the problem is unique because numbers were never given and only percentages were used to solve the problem. What or how would this question have been different if one or the other had been used in asking the question. Anyway, enough of that.
So I made a decision about the job thing today. I decided to let some of the recruiters I worked with in the past to talk to their sales managers and let them know that a 15 year computer consultant is willing to work for $25/hr normally commanding double and triple is available because of school but can only work part time. Did those calls yesterday. I'll see how that goes. In the mean time, I'm going to pursue this thing with the real estate agent and see how that pans out. If it works out, I'll quit the Home Depot job. So I had that interview tonight. It went for 2.25 hrs. My eyes were starting to shut. I got out of there at 11:30pm. Looks like the job is locked. My concern was being overqualified and that the guy would think of me as being a short-timer risk. I was upfront with him and he liked it. Would you believe, I have to go in for a second interview? Then if I get hired, theres a 4 or 5 full days worth of orientation to go through. Uh, didn't like that. The guy sensed my wonder about how that would cut into my study and school time so he said that he would probably be able to swing a shortened one for me with some orientation broken up into more manageable blocks. They have these orientations twice a week at a central location. Geez, that's a lot of hiring going on.
One thing I learned was that I'd be working night crew where I'd have to run forklifts and stock shelves. Don't mind it. I did that growing up for over 10 years at my parents supermarkets.
You know, I've never had problems at interviews. Unless, my skill set was a poort fit or I saw that they might not have a right fit, I would actually end the interview myself and say, "You found the wrong guy" I've done that a couple of times in the past. The interviewers are just shocked. I don't think anyone ever did that to them before. I look at interviews with a filter that says... I'm going to have to work with these guys. How do they come off to me? I always ask... "How do you like it here?" What don't you like? I always walk out feeling like we had a good talk rather than being on the blocks. I used to teach interview classes and hold seminars on them when I was in college actually. I would put various panelists in and give them different roles to challenge the interview and to top it off, I would video record the whole thing and show the expression and the body language to the interviewer so that they knew what we were seeing. This is one area I feel quite comfortable with regarding B-School applications.
