Off to the Library
After sharing my results last night before going to bed, I felt so disappointed in myself. Why wasn't I doing a lot better? Why do I see others doing so well and me.... not so well. The "doubting my potential" critters started to infect my bed last night you see.I've been studying by myself. Being such a people person... I must admit that I'm pretty lonely. The study takes my mind off of it, but during breaks I have this good sense that what I'm doing is a great thing that, but I can't seem to get over the loneliness. It's kind of weird. I met this girl named Cheryl at the library yesterday and she's studying for the California Law Bar exam. I saw her studying and just went up and said hi! " What are you studying? " I met two other guys studying for their GMAT over the last 2 weeks and two days ago I meet this girl studying for her CPA exam. Are they as lonely as I am? I'm thinking they are. For example, The two guys had this stern, I'm trying hard to do something posture, but after I talked with them a bit... I could see a jump in their attitude. The girl yesterday too. She has these bags under her eyes that really stuck out and she looked oh so serious. After talking with her for about 5 minutes, she would not just smile, but would talk to me on her way in and out of the library. And she has such a great smile now. She's perky now. Before, she looked like someone I didn't want to mess with.
So my conclusion for a resolution is that I think I need some study buddies. This may sound weird, but my best results in studying for the GMAT when I'm dead tired and I'm set on focusing like I never did before... I start to talk to myself. Weird huh? It sounds like a murmur to anyone within 2 feet of me, but it's almost like 2 people going through the questions together if that makes any sense and the synergy is better. Maybe I need a shrink. haahhahaahaha
Anyway, I'm off to the Library again.
Oh by the way, I have a dilemma to address. Financially, my wife and I are seeing the need for me to have a part time job so that we don't dig into our savings like we've been doing. I applied to Home Depot and have an interview tonight for doing night work. But the issue created the delimaa is whether to go with Home Depot or to consider an opportunity that many make many a B-school proud. I met this Real Estate agent yesterday who promised me the ability to add my business card to all 5,000 of her mailings for free. I have an initial verbal agreement with her to do computer consulting for her 5 computer 2 man agency for now. Basically, I could be starting a computer consulting, home repair business that charges say $30-$40 dollars an hour. Home Depot is probably paying between $10 and $12 an hour. It would probably take about an $50 initial investment for the computer business for business cards. As, I only want to spend 15 hrs or less on work, even then I'm not sure whether schoolwork, GMAT and Work are even a possible mix right now. My wife and I agree that if the three become too much that after 2 weeks, I'd drop the work.
I have pretty good success in building businesses. The only problem I've ever had that was hard to overcome was exposure and marketing. I've built consulting branches of three different companies over the last 10 years and saw business grow by more than 10x. But I usually handled the initial introductions, business plans and engineering project management. I never lost a customer and referrals aren't a problem. Once I meet a prospective customer, my rate doing future business with them is 95%. I've never been called over the top, or too sales oriented. I'm open, genuine, sincere, knowledgeable and therefore trustworthy is the feedback I usually hear somewhere along the line. It's just getting my foot in the door with those first few clients in a newly transplanted area. This thing with the agent could solve that... but... would I risk my b-school to be doing this. In case you haven't read my previous post... my scores on my practice questions aren't exactly something to rave about. It's more like duck and cover. The class is an upper division course and is pretty intense as well. I'm told that getting an A is definitely going to matter a lot when I apply according to the admissions consultant that I talked to. Yeah, I know.. what's the worry.. I don't even have the business going yet. It's just that I'm so confident about building and growing business.. that I think the implications create a real and necessary consideration. I'll think it over. Any feedback appreciated.
