Change of plans for working part time

So, my wife has been here in Southern California since Saturday. It's been great having her here. I dropped her off at the airport a few hours ago. She came down for my brother in laws B-day.

Anyway, so my in-laws and my wife all discussed with me the cons of why a part time job would hamper my studies. My father-in-law is a former University Engineering professor of many years. He clearly understands the education system and the nature of studying. Anyway, he reasoned that the disjointedness of going to work and school and then to studying again with the time to drive and work would not be a valuable use of time compared to the importance of the results of my classes and GMAT studies. My mother-in-law argued simply that I would be too tired with everything going within a short period of time and was concerned that I would ruin things by working. My wife, says we can handle things financially now after some stocks I cashed out on my part, some savings and some insurance money that came in. If I just had the GMAT to contend with then no big deal. But the two together is just a bit much to put together was the reasoning. Again, the class is significant to my application and it's a class that has already consumed 17 hrs of time just this week alone. (That includes 5.5 hrs of class time, 2 hrs of driving time and 9.5 hrs of study time that I've done so far) It's supposed to get a little more involved as the weeks progress.

So I guess I'm not working. I'm relieved, but torn over the whole thing. I sort of feel like there's more weight on me to perform and everyone in the family is doing so much to support me. Even my wife is by herself now.

So when I hit the last 50 or so question in DS today in the OG book and found myself getting a bunch wrong, I knew something was up. Frankly, I could clearly tell that that last 50 DS questions were definitely a notch hire in difficulty though. My primary reasons were from lack of brain power and sometimes from not seeing the trick wording of the questions that caused me to get some wrong. I realized that I was stressed from the decision and tired from the Beach day and from the anxiety of thinking about the implication of everything my loved ones are doing for me. I was actually a bit sad because I felt like I should be doing better because of their support.

All in all, I'm doing this because it's a dream and a goal that oh so fits my personality, experiences and desire. But with a family that has been as supportive as it has been, it's easy to forget the primary reason all this started and instead put on unnecessary burdens of expectation on myself. So if I sound like my energy or motivation is coming from the "burden of other's expectation" on me... I've lost total focus. Mentally, this is what I'm thinking, but emotionally it's a bit different and my mind has to tell my heart what to do and feel right now. Anyway, just wanted to share some of the emotions and thoughts going on with my situation.

Ok, so I'm going to bed early to be better rested for tomorrow. To be completely open and frank, I've learned from experience that I handle stress a lot better when I'm rested and had enough sleep.

Hi, I'm Terry and I saw your site from I find your site really useful. It has tons of school information which I wouldn't find otherwise. I took GMAT last month and didn't do so well. I'm studying to test again in September.

I hope to get into USC, UCLA, NYU, LSE, LBS....I don't think I will get into Wharton, or Columbia. I'm only 24...

I hope to have my website setup soon!!

BTW, do you use an error log while studying? I don't have one either but people at GMAT CLUB thinks its very helpful.

Hi Terry, yeah keep me posted if you start up a weblog. I have a customization document if your interested if find that you need it to setup your web site the way you like.

Anyway, I don't have enough standard forum posts to have an error log. I'm an author on GMATClub through private invitation. Besides, I concluded that keeping my error log in computer format is too time consuming. Writing out all those exponents and square root symbols would just kill me time wise. Not to mention the geometry graphs. So I created a notebook and split it up into 8 sections for the quant and 1 for each of the verbal sections. The quant sections I have are 1) Geometry, 2) Algebra 3) Coordinates 4) Work (rt=d) 5) variables 5) Ratios 6) Probability 7) Percents.

I started with a 3 ring binder, but found that moving around at different study locations like I do, made it impossible to use the binder and keep everythign together. So I just use a spiral notebook with little post it note markers that are pretty tattered looking now from constant use, travel in my backpack and reading while I'm on breaks or have time to kill.

These are the types of questions where I note the concept of a question that blow me away or showed me a trick that ETS uses to try and mess with your mind if your not reading carefully. I sometimes write out the question and answer it very thoroughly, even writing out paragraphs to explain my logic for solving the way I did.

I also write down things I need to remember in it like OOO, EEE, EOE. Which stands for Odd*Odd=Odd, Even*Even=Even, Even*Odd=Even. Tricks to remember other things like "TOF"and "TOS" which stands for Square root of Two is One point Four and square root of Three is One point Seven.

I know MBA07 has a bunch of things in word format, but I just don't see how I can do it on computer and still be efficient with my time. Others seem to be able to do it, but not me.
