Journey to my MBA

Another day

Just got back from a 40 minute walk-jog.  Feel good right now.  I've been starting to walk every other night for the last week and it's been good for me.  Wish I had started this earlier.

Went to the GMAT testing center this afternoon at about the same time I'll be taking the test tommorrow.  It was a good idea as mapquest was a little off.   In retrospect, I realized how helpful it was to know the traffic I might run into heading over there.  There was some, but nevertheless, I was glad to know I minimized my surprises.  I went into the check-in area and asked a lot of questions about how it all worked to go to the restroom, how one checks in and how one asks to walk out for a break and etc...

There are so many cameras in that room.  One for each cube and several others for the doors facing the glass wall seperating the check-in area and the testing room.  The surveillance looked someone like liquor store cameras fastened around the whole room attached to the walls.  The camera mounts were butted up against the ceiling.  The cameras were black.  I was glad to see that the chairs were business like office cubicle chairs.  They looked comfortable enough to sit in all day.

Differnt topic:
Some tidbits I wanted to write about are some stories from people I've talked with over the last week or two that I found interesting.

Story 1:  Ran into an old friend of mine last week.  He had graduated from the UC Irvine MBA part-time program.  I was telling him about my journey and encouraged me by telling me a side of his acceptance that he never told me.  Apparently, he had applied to the full time 2 year program and was rejected.  However, a couple of weeks later, they contacted him and let him know that a spot was available in the part time program if he was interested.  So UC Irvine graciously gave him 48 hrs to think it over and decide otherwise they were going to offer the position to someone else.  (Not a lot of time to decide your fate for the next 3 years).  So I guess it's obvious what his decision was.  So I was thinking... for whatever school I apply to, I'm going to see who I can talk to about moving my application to the part time side if I don't get into the full-time side.  He told me that it was easier to get into the part time at many schools.

Story 2:  Ran into my Best Man at my wedding at the bookstore today.  I was there reading magazines to prepare my mind with current events for the GMAT essays tommorrow.  Anyway, He told me that he applied to Business School 2 years out of college.  UCLA and Berkeley, but was rejected.    He did well on his GMAT.  He had taken Princeton Review classes to prepare for the test and said it was very helpful.  My friend the engineer is so picky about details.  He said that the class helped him most to not try to solve every problem, but rather learn how to solve or pick enough facts out of the question to know how to solve the problems.  Well 2 years out of school is kind of hard to apply with.  From what I hear, 5 years seems to be the generally accepted average.  Anyway, "Why didn't I know this?"  I was embarrased.  But you know... he is one of the most humble friends that I have.  Despite excellent acheievements, you just won't hear him share that kind of information openly unless directly asked.

Story 3:  I've been studying at the school student center study lounge for the last 4 weeks and have started to get to know the regulars there.  Myself and 6 other girls.  Other people come and go, but the 7 of us are the regulars.  These girls really do some major studying.  3 girls are studying for their Dental entrance exam (DAT), 2 girls are studying for the MCAT (Medical school entrance exam) and one lady is study for her Medical School Boards.  They all have their own story and they all acknowledge having given up so much to prepare for these exams and for their studies as a whole.  It's sort of comforting to know that I'm not alone in my future career studies.  Everyday, as any of us walk in, its,"good morning" and as we leave, "see you tommorrow"  I find that funny.  We don't say, "goodnight"

We've kissed our social lives goodbye and so we all say, "see you tommorrow" instead.  Think about that for a sec.  I don't even recall who started that.

We all sit at different tables and sit in a way so as not to look at one another to help ourselves focus.  When we eat as we study, we walk outside on the patio, eat up and come back in to continue the day out of respect for one another.  If we weren't so focused on our studies, it would be such a depressing room.  But it's not thankfully.

That's the end of my stories.

One last tidbit.  I found this web site that allows one to send files as large as 1 gigabyte in size to anyone for free.  You just select the file or zip compressed file and enter the e-mail address or addresses and then click "submit".  The recipient receives an e-mail that contains a link where they can download the file for up to 7 days after the e-mail is sent.  Since most of our e-mails are limited in the size of the files we can send anyone... this is a very good option for many of us.  No need to register, enter your name or provide any personal info to create an account.  You just submit and that 's it.  Very cool.

I've added the link as well to the "Other Resources" category on my side bar.
