B- School News

Duke-Fuqua - Here's a recent and interesting Basketball/sports analogy to describe Duke's philosophy on leadership. Source

Carnegie-Mellon is undergoing some significant changes. With Tepper's donation, the school is on it's way up the rankings. Acceptances have also been getting more difficult in the full-time program. Read about Tepper and his support of the school.

Notre Dame - I don't know exactly when, but the Mendoza School of Business @ Notre Dame has completely re-hashed their cirriculum. It's very edgy. I wonder how successful the changes are going. I like their name of the new format, "Thought Leader" . I guess every school has to be as original as possible with regard to either their re-design or education initatives with real world integration.

Jack Welch - Business Schools get great public bragging rights when they align themselves with great business leaders. So initially, I was rather envious of Kellogg who announced some time ago that Jack Welch had visited on April 22nd to share about winning in business. Little did I realize that Jack was on his book tour for his new book "Winning". Anyway, other schools he visited were:
HBS -4/12
Michigan - Ross - 4/14
NYU (Stern). - 4/19
Kellogg - 4/22
Stanford 4/27
Chicago GSB - 4/28
Univ of Denver 4/28
Boston University 5/2
Dartmouth-Tuck - 5/4

Some nuggets of wisdom he continues to recite at each location are:
1) "Be sure you pick a company where the sensibilities of the people are the same as yours. If you're a nerd, go hang out with nerds".

2) To be successful in the business world, employees must work hard to earn initial recognition. Workers should exceed their bosses expectations, while making sure not to appear overeager.

3) "Put your ambition in your pocket, don't wear it on your forehead - it's a career killer"

4) Hire people that are smarter than you

5) Have good compensation systems in place because your employees' productivity is based on how you reward them

6) Never give people a raise without telling them their strengths and weaknesses; your success comes from growing them

7) When acquiring another company, all of the financial analysis in the world won't help you in a deal if the cultures don't mesh

8) Be a risk-taker; in business, the last thing you ever want to do is be cautious

9)Consulting is a great profession; it's a great place to learn, to grow and to get out of to go somewhere else

10)When you are in the workforce, be sure to over deliver; make your boss look good, and your career will take care of itself

Ok, so who really cares right? Well, in case your interested, you can watch one of the discussions via recorded video Internet. (Join incoming dean of the Daniels College of Business, Dr. Karen L. Newman, for an intimate discussion with Mr. Welch regarding the role of values based leadership in management.)

Michigan - Ross - Launched Phase I of it's new expansion

Details of the expansion

  • Current expansion plans require an additional $30 million over and above Ross's $100 million donation.
  • It's important to note that the new facility is part of the school’s eight-year, $350 million campaign called The Michigan Difference: Leading in Thought and Action, which started in 2000. So far, $245 million has been raised.
  • Phase I included the announcement of Kohn Pederson Fox(KPF) as the facilities designer. KPF designed Wharton's Huntsman Hall, Stanford School of Business, as well as a portion of the latest buildings at UCLA, Univ of Chicago, NYU, and Oxford.
  • Construction is set to begin May 2006. Therefore, my prediction is that the school re-modeling should be completed some time in early 2009. That means, going to Ross now is going to be VERY inconveniant as a student with regard to finding reasonable group study locations, hanging out around school and being moved around as sections of buildings are torn down. As this is a re-model as opposed to say a new building, I wonder how bad it will get. Ross is a pretty busy building as it is during school term. This construction is going to drastically change what students can partake in for a a few years. Such is the cost of a great new re-model right!
  • Preliminary details of the building designs will be released this summer (05')
  • The proposed concept features a spiral roof line beginning with three stories at the building entrance and ascending to six stories at the apex. At present, the Ross School campus has 306,400 square feet. Based on the initial concepts, approximately 181,800 may be demolished and 245,000 will be added. The net gain to the campus will be 100,000 square feet with an estimated 80 percent of operations moving to a new location.
