Recently, I started to come up with plans to start my own business consulting firm for small businesses. I'll focus on performing experienced IT work for companies that can't afford to hire full time IT people. I'm struggling with marketing though. I have very few connections in the area that I live. I realize that word of mouth will be a big help later on, but for now, I need to figure out a way to approach companies that could benefit from such services. It won't be easy. I've worked at consulting firms where I built up clientele before. Anyone have ideas.I'll still pursue a full time position. I'll sell off the business when it gets to be too much. I actually started a similiar business and sold it off for profit in years past.
By the way, my wife and I came up with some terrific new business ideas that I frankly have now intention of pursuing, but may be of interest to someone reading this journal entry. I know they would be profitable.
1) The first one is a series of computer testing centers when the SAT becomes fully computerized. As many b-school applicants can testify.. GMAT testing centers aren't easy to get access to without advance reservations. With the SAT coming online... they'll need some significant square footage to handle the new business.
2) The second one is a cat and dog home/hotel. People are absolutely sensitive about their pets. In certain middle class and higher areas, people hate to put their pets in pet clinics or the like during long stays because they know their pet will just be taken care of in a cage. A few weeks back, there was a story about a woman who has devoted her large home to become a cat hotel. She allows the pets to roam around the home and to be treated to regular petting. She has a few people who come to her home on a regular basis to just pet and play with the cats at certain times of the day. She has 19 spaces and is at 80% capacity on the average and has 100% capacity on most weekends and holidays. She is looking at expanding to double the capacity here shortly. She charges $55/night which includes the play time, the homely accomodations and food. She has people who drive an hour just to drop off their cat at her business. Sounds crazy, but geez... what an idea!

THIS is the time of year when MBA students run not from classroom to classroom but from interview to interview as they try to get the high-paying job that they expect their qualification to deliver. It seems that the demand for MBAs is now strong again, after four decidedly weak years. “The big eaters of MBA talent have regained their hiring appetite,” says Ken Keeley, director of career opportunities at Carnegie Mellon's Tepper School of Business in Pittsburgh. At New York's Stern School, close to Wall Street, the number of jobs offered to this year's MBA class by the beginning of this month was double that at the same stage in 2004. Better still, average starting salaries in investment banking for Stern graduates were—at $95,000—up by $10,000 from a year ago.
But just as the market value of an MBA is reviving, its academic credibility is being attacked. In a forthcoming article to be published posthumously in Academy of Management Learning & Education, Sumantra Ghoshal argues that many of the “worst excesses of recent management practices have their roots in a set of ideas that have emerged from business-school academics over the last 30 years.”

David G. Sanderson is a partner in the Los Angeles office of Bain & Company, where he heads global recruiting. Sanderson joined the firm in 1989 and founded Bain Los Angeles in 1995. Before joining Bain, Sanderson worked at IBM (IBM ) as a national account sales manager, systems engineer, and programmer. He holds an MBA from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. Sanderson says Bain stresses collaborative, team-based work within a meritocracy, where the individual can progress quickly through the ranks. He recently spoke with BusinessWeek Online Reporter Jeffrey Gangemi. Here are edited excerpts of their talk:
Q: What attributes do you look for in a consultant?
A: First and foremost, we look for great analytical skills and capabilities, combined with an ability to determine where value exists in a company. Also, the ability to work in a team environment and interpersonal skills are important. Delivering our set of recommendations to clients requires great communication skills.
