Survey results are out

I have the results of the School Application Survey. This survey asked the question, “What schools will you be applying to and which of the three are the top three priority?”

There were 13 people who answered the Survey. (By the way, if you haven’t voted yet, you still can by going to (What Business School will you be applying to? If I get another 5-10 votes, I’ll republish the results and analysis below with the updates).

The survey showed 4 tiers of schools in terms of application popularity

Tier 1: 6 Votes
1) Wharton

Tier 2: 3 Votes
1) Harvard
2) Kellogg
4) Stanford
5) Virginia – Darden
6) UC Berkely – Haas
7) Indian School of Business

Tier 3: 2 Votes
2) Arizona State
3) Carnegie Mellon
4) Chicago
5) Cornell
6) Michigan
7) Texas (McCombs)

Tier 4: 1 Vote
1) Columbia
2) Dartmouth (Tuck)
3) NYU – Stern
4) Thunderbird
5) Yale
6) College (Canada)
7) LBS (London)
8) Duke (Fuqua)
9) Georgetown
10) Indian (Kelley)
11) MIT (Sloan)
12) Ohio State
13) Purdue (Krannert)
14) UNC (Kenan-Flagler)

Schools with no votes were removed from the list.

The schools listed in the survey were amongst the top 50 ranked schools according to the most recent Business Week B-School ratings. Side note: If a person filling out the survey found that the school they will be applying to is not listed, a blank slot was left open for the School to be listed.

Here’s an interesting observation. There was not a single survey taker who listed a U.S. school being applied to that was not on the list of 50. In other words, if the school was ranked less that 50, not a single person was showing interest. Some people did manually fill in international schools like INSEAD or LBS however.

Regarding the priority of school applications, Each tier appeared to have a clear choice being favored.

Tier 1: Wharton – Was all by itself. It had double the votes of any other school

Tier 2: Amongst the following Tier 2 schools
1) Harvard
2) Kellogg
4) Stanford
5) Virginia – Darden
6) UC Berkely – Haas
7) Indian School of Business

Harvard and Kellogg (3 votes) were tied for most favored, followed by INSEAD (2 votes), and lastly by the 4 remaining school listed above (1 vote each)

Tier 3: Amongst the Tier 3 Schools
2) Arizona State
3) Carnegie Mellon
4) Chicago
5) Cornell
6) Michigan
7) Texas (McCombs)

Arizona and Carnegie Mellon were tied for priority choice (1 vote each) with the other schools having 0 priority votes.

Tier 4: Amongst the Tier 4 Schools
1) Columbia
2) Dartmouth (Tuck)
3) NYU – Stern
4) Thunderbird
5) Yale
6) College (Canada)
7) LBS (London)
8) Duke (Fuqua)
9) Georgetown
10) Indian (Kelley)
11) MIT (Sloan)
12) Ohio State
13) Purdue (Krannert)
14) UNC (Kenan-Flagler)

The first 7 schools listed were priority schools with 1 vote each while the others have no priority votes.

The only conclusions that I feel that can possibly be drawn from this survey are the following:
1) There appear to be 3 possibly 4 tiers of school popularity amongst the top 50 schools in the U.S.
2) Wharton, Harvard and Kellogg appear to be the three most popular schools amongst the top 50 schools in the U.S.
3) The following schools are more slanted towards being a backup school or an in my wildest dreams class of desirability
a. Chicago
b. Cornell (Johnson)
c. Michigan
d. Texas (McCombs)
e. Duke (Fuqua)
f. Georgetown (McDonough)
g. Indian (Kelley)
h. MIT (Sloan)
i. Ohio State
j. Purdue (Krannert)
k. UNC (Kenan-Flagler)

Lastly, these conclusions are light in weight as a whole. As there were only 13 surveys answered instead of the 50 I was hoping for, that might have put more weight into the numbers of this survey, I believe we have to take these results with a high degree of caution. Moreover, we have to remember that popularity does not equal quality of education at any one school.

Overall though, I find the results very interesting to consider.

Aren't you surprised that the Indian School of Business made its entry? I voted for that. Iam intrested to know how many (apart from me) voted for it.Itz a big school with lots of promise especially with tie ups from Kellog and Wharton.

Ah, so it was you who remain anonymous. I wasn't really surprised. There seems to be an incredibly large Indian population of applicants to higher levels of education over the last 4 years. I'm just so impressed with the Indian education process that encourages such high levels of learning. Although, I know it's extrememely competitive at every school grade you go to. It appears that up until the last year or two, the entire country was moving to make education the way to achieve dreams.

Interesting results, but, as you say, a sample size of 13 isn't big enought for them to much more than 'interesting'.
