London Business School fails at redefining racial diversity in online application
Here's the problem, a school comments on how they value racial diversity, but they make you delineate your race. In effect, this announces your racial difference and possibly opens the door to someone being biased against you. The problem here is that a school or any other entity that claims to be racially diverse must measure how diverse they really are by classifying your race. Makes sense right?But, the truth is that it also matters how you measure your diversity when you are looking for measurements too. So, when I saw the categories that LBS is using, I was rather surprised.
Their online application was just changed to have a section called, "Diversity monitoring section". It's section 9 of the online application. Below is the excerpt from that page. If you're in the middle of applying there, I suggest you look this section over again.
They are UK biased. Rather than being racial diverse, they are actually trying to match current UK census info with UK applicant racial stats. The defined categories don't really help with "international background" measurement data. Why is white distinguished by a limited set of critiera of British, Irish and other? What if they are German, Italian or from the USA? No wonder the Irish and Brits have such heated political and street battles. You would take the time to qualify Brits VERSUS Irish and put all other whites as other? The Asian categories are screwed up too. They have Chinese, but no Korean, Japanese or Indian.
Yes, Yes, I know that the categories are defined through the UK Census. But, the categories are measuring UK diversity and not true "International" diversity.
LBS really messed this one up. Claiming racial diversity is one thing, but "being" diverse is another thing. Get it together LBS. Nice try, but a truly biased result. Please redefine your categories to be more reflective of a "truly" international university. -Dave
