I'm fed up with poor Business School Application communication to applicants

What really bothers me about the Tuck essay announcement that I just posted is that there is no web text on the ENTIRE Tuck Admissions website that showed these essays came out. The actual PDF file is the only thing that showed the date. If I had created an account on their website, then perhaps I would have been notified. Not sure. I'm not at all happy about the way this came out.

In case you're wondering, I run an automated program that flags these kinds of things and I get notified based on the web pages or parameters I setup. That's how I find out about these B-School ongoings. I don't have that kind of time. I let technology flag things for me. Not only that, but the program highlights exactly what was added and let's me know exactly what text was removed. Nifty huh? This was relatively easy to do for other web sites up till now because the essays showed up somewhere or a new date showed up on other B-School websites. This Tuck update was sneaky as heck. "And how are we to be notified when these new essays go up?"

I've been at this a while. So I can't even imagine how difficult it might be for someone to get an idea of the timing of all this. Tuck and the other top B-Schools REALLY should improve their PR announcements and at least let the world know that the applications are now available. I've not seen one single PR or AP wire news item that says this for any school for the last 3 years. It's just not right. I'm not just saying this as a complaint... although it clearly is. I think it's rather short sighted and not thought out to realize that every school should do whatever they can to notify everyone that the application essays are out. Every school wants us to put in our best effort. But if they don't announce the essay releases, then how the !@#%@!#^&% are potentially great candidates supposed to be kept in the loop on this. I'm really pissed over this issue. I think EVERY F!@%^%!@# school misses out on some great candidates every year because of this oversight.

Look, I know many of the B-School web sites say something to the affect of "Essays will be released in August or late August or something like that. That's kind of ok. But why not offer an e-mail to notify me that they did indeed come out? Why not send out a postcard?

In other words, I don't care if every school puts out great info sessions, new web brochures, sends out nice looking viewbooks and creates really solid school web sites to answer all my questions. If you don't tell me when the app essays are out... what good is any of that stuff!!!!! Yo... B-School XYZ and everyone... please improve on this or let me know what the candid response is and I'll post it. How do top notch schools that are supposed to train up the best leaders in the world not get this yet?

Sorry about my rant. I need some decaf and some rest.

You are correct Dave

I registered at many schools well before the deadlines and never got a mail about the day essays are released..dont know WTF these schools achieve by being secretive

You are so right! Tuck esp sucks at it. Last yr I sent in my app on 12-Jan (R3), and the ONLY communication from their side was on 17-Mar telling me the outcome of the app. They didnt even have the courtesy of informing applicants that the application has been received, completed etc. Not even an automated mailer.

But ya I guess most schools, though not as bad, do not deal with it properly.

Anyway, keep up the great work!

Hi Dave...
This seems funny...

The adcom at Tuck has been otherwise very responsive to whatever qns I have had about Tuck over the last 6 months...

Lets see - have informed them about this lack of info on the site as well as email info to people who have registered...

Lets see how fast the response is!

the schools are not being secretive and feel it is more of a "dont give a crap" mentality on the part of the web master / AdCom for each of the schools.

I have yet to find a "technologically challenging" MBA web site. That is, they are all simply-coded and are not difficult to maintain or update.

Not what you would expect from top schools.

An e-mail to let us know about important dates and the release of application essays should we so desire is all I'm asking for schools to impliment.

E-mail has been around for more than 20 years. Many of the admissions staff have MBA's themselves. Why is this simple task overlooked? It's time for change.
