Yesterday, I received this crazy e-mail from HEC Paris about how all their MBA students will be given a "free" Ipod. Moreover, the letter punctuated how I should apply by May 29th for the Sept 2006 class start date.
This is a cheap marketing tactic. What made it worse was the fact that it was signed by Associate Dean Valerie Gauthier. This was a mistake. It's a good thing that the school has a reasonable reputation. It's too bad that they made such a bad marketing mistake. Get it together Valerie/HEC Paris. An iPod is not enough of a reason to apply to any school!
Here's the e-mail.
Apple and HEC Sign Historic iPod Deal
Apple and HEC have just signed a unique agreement that will enable MBA participants to take advantage of iPods and the fast-growing iPod technology. Apple will also install a major new computer room in the MBA building with high-powered computers and tools.
Every participant entering the MBA program in September 2006 and beyond will be offered a free iPod engraved with the HEC logo on the back. With iPods in hand, you will have access to some lectures, tutorials and other pedagogical materials in video format. Your iPod will also enable you to upload class schedules, language lessons, maps of Paris, and online news information.
Apple selected HEC because our MBA graduates continue to make a difference in today’s global marketplace. Apple wants to test its innovative digital solutions in our cooperative hands-on environment where professors and participants work together to create new content and case studies. Management education will benefit enormously from the Apple-HEC tie-up, as we integrate digital technology even deeper into the MBA curriculum.
We hope you will participate in the iPod pilot by joining our MBA program. If you wish to start in September 2006, the deadline for application submission is Monday May 29.
