Thoughts on rankings and credit for positive outcomes

Today, USC-Marshall posted an online letter from the newly appointed Dean Gilligan. By the way, I absolutely love his last name. It makes me laugh every time I hear it because I loved the television show "Gilligan's Island" so much.

Since the US NEWS Rankings came out on Friday, most B-School have posted either a PR wire on their rankings or merely posted an online article about the rankings on their own website.

I really liked Dean Gilligan's approach in his letter because he didn't just recognize the good rankings of Marshall, but also commented on how they are still working to improve things. I think that's an appropriate posture to take for any B-School; even if the school ranked first or second. It's not that attractive to me when a School just takes the high rank as a reward and gushes over all the great things they did to get there. It would be far better to tell us how you'll continue to make things better! I'm sure other schools did take this posture, but I simply didn't have the time to look at each and every US News letter from each school. I just happened to be drawn to the USC one.... especially because of their abrupt and soap opera like Dean change that occured in February.

It would be truly great if B-Schools would tell us where they think they could improve. When they do that, they show us how much they work at their craft of leadership and how motivated they are at pioneering B-School education for future generations. I'm not saying that B-Schools should be fully transparent. I'm saying that it is strategic to show some of ones struggles and to share what one is doing to alleviate these struggles. They can't share everything because each school is unfairly pitted against one another by the media and through the various commercial rankings.

Lastly, there is one thing that bothered me about Dean Gilligan's letter. It was when he talked about the employment numbers for graduating students. The economy is hot for MBA's right now. Consequently, MBA salaries are flying high and apps to B-Schools are up. So in the context of a hot economy, I think we all need to be careful about our understanding of the spin being put forth by every school as to the significant amount of employment that MBA's are getting right after graduation. I understand that School name is a factor. But it's just so easy for a Dean, Admin Director or the like to take all the credit for the great numbers because of the work that they and their team put forth.

I'm just saying that when B-school XYZ says that employment after graduation is predicted to increase from 70% last year to 90% this year, that it's just not the school doing it. It would be better to see just how much employment is increasing across the aboard for all schools for this year and last year. Then one could compare the percentages to their peer B-Schools in order to see just how much the school staff, Dean, Alumni funding or the like really made a difference in this area.
I'm just saying that if B-School XYZ had 5% more employment numbers than their peers last year, but have 13% compared to their peers this year, then I'd say the School did a wonderful job of increasing growth by 8%. So, if the actual numbers went from 70% to 90%, then I wouldn't say that the B-School was responsible for 20% growth.

In short, don't take all the credit for the economy guys. It's deceiving and rides the edges of unethical representation.
