Dean of Duke's Fuqua business school to step down

Dean Breeden gave a 15 month notice. That's a long time to be a short timer. By the way... in case you were wondering why I copy and paste whole articles instead of just linking them.... it's because I've noticed a good percentage of articles over time that disappear from web sites. If I have it here... then at least I know what the original article said.

From Triangle Business Journal

The dean of Duke University's Fuqua School of Business will step down from the position effective June 30, 2007, Duke Provost Peter Lange said in a written statement released Monday.

Douglas T. Breeden, who took over as dean of the university's business school in 2001, will resign from the top post to resume full-time teaching and research as the William W. Priest Professor of Finance at Fuqua.

"Under Doug's leadership, the size and quality of the faculty has increased, the school's finances have solidified and the endowment has grown substantially," Lange said. "Significant investments have been made in teaching quality, the Ph.D. program has been expanded and the school's global reach has been extended through new programs and partnerships."

Lange said he has asked Christine Moorman, the T. Austin Finch, Sr. Professor of Marketing at Fuqua, to chair the search advisory committee for Breeden's successor.

Prior to his appointment as dean in 2001, Breeden served on the faculties of the University of Chicago, Stanford University, Duke and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Breeden is also the chairman emeritus and co-founder of Chapel Hill-based money management firm Smith Breeden Associates.

Breeden to Step Down

He plans to resume teaching and research full-time while retaining his appointment as the William W. Priest Professor of Finance at Fuqua.

Durham, N.C. -- Douglas T. Breeden, the dean of Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business since 2001, has decided to step down, Duke Provost Peter Lange announced Monday. Breeden’s resignation as dean will be effective June 30, 2007, at which point he plans to resume teaching and research full-time while retaining his appointment as the William W. Priest Professor of Finance at Fuqua.

Lange, the university’s top academic officer, praised Breeden for the "exceptional progress" that Fuqua has made during his tenure as dean.

"Under Doug’s leadership, the size and quality of the faculty has increased, the school’s finances have solidified and the endowment has grown substantially. Significant investments have been made in teaching quality, the Ph.D. program has been expanded and the school’s global reach has been extended through new programs and partnerships," Lange said. "This is a very strong school and Doug’s leadership has made a real difference."

Breeden said he has enjoyed his time as dean. "This is a very special place with a strong faculty and staff, as well as wonderful students and alumni, and I look forward to remaining an active part of the Duke community in a faculty role when I leave the deanship. Until then, I look forward to working with Team Fuqua to continue the school’s forward momentum."

Breeden said one factor that contributed to his decision was the progress being made in planning and fund-raising for a new classroom building for Fuqua.

"My major goal during the past year has been raising funds for our new classroom building and library. I am now confident that we will have the building under construction in the near future, well before I step down as dean," Breeden said. "We have also just completed our new strategic plan, and while I will move forward with implementing the plan between now and 2007, I feel like it is a natural time to pass the baton to a new dean."

Lange said he has asked Christine Moorman, the T. Austin Finch, Sr. Professor of Marketing at Fuqua, to chair the search advisory committee for Breeden’s successor.

"Christine combines an excellent record of scholarship and real-world understanding with a commitment to excellence in business and management education and to the Fuqua School," Lange said. "I am pleased she has agreed to chair the search and to work closely with Gerald Hassell, chair of Fuqua’s Board of Visitors and president of The Bank of New York. I plan to appoint other members in the coming weeks, including additional faculty and others from both Fuqua and the larger university community.

"Doug has given us 15 months’ notice, and I am confident we can conduct a thorough search and recruit a first-class person to the deanship."

Before being appointed dean in 2001, Breeden served on the faculties of the University of Chicago, Stanford University, Duke and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is known for his groundbreaking research on consumption and intertemporal asset pricing, as well as on mortgage securities and hedging.

Breeden is the founding editor of the Journal of Fixed Income and was associate editor for five top journals in financial economics. He was also a member of the board of directors of the American Finance Association.

He holds a Ph.D. in finance from Stanford and a bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the chairman emeritus and co-founder of Smith Breeden Associates, a money-management firm in Chapel Hill, N.C.
