FT Rankings for 2006 released

As the Finanical Times B-School rankings was released yesterday, I thought I'd note some interesting journalistic commentary from various news sources.

I once read that PR info of an entity is pro-actively placed there 80% of the time. I'm not all that surprised that Wharton came first. After all, it did start out as a school of finance before it was the school of business. Some things just stay with you... especially if you're well known for it.

The interactive FT rankings can be found here: 2004-2006 Interactive

The 2006 PDF version can be found here: 2006 Financial Times Rankings (PDF)

FT's commentary article follows:
US schools continue to dominate

The year 2002 was one of the worst in living memory for graduating MBA students.

Many were forced to take jobs at lower salaries than they had relinquished before their studies.

But today, three years after graduation, most must feel they made the right choice.

The lowest average salary today for US residents at a US school in the top 100 is $73,536*, a salary that many managers in their early 30s would find enviable.

The response is anything but silence in the ranks
There are few things that are more likely to raise the blood pressure of a business school dean than the testy subject of rankings. But few of them doubt that they are influential among students.

Wharton tops business school ranking, Fox places
The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business topped the Financial Times' list of global full-time M.B.A. programs, which was released Monday.

Wharton, which shared the top spot with Harvard Business School last year, pulled ahead because the salaries reported by its alumni were higher than the salaries reported by Harvard alumni.

U.S. alums of Wharton's MBA program have an average salary of almost $200,000. Their average salary five years ago before they started the program was $70,000.

Wharton also topped the list in 2003.

Temple University's Fox School of Business and Management was the only other Philadelphia-area M.B.A. program to make the list. It tied with Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Management for No. 67, up from No. 74 a year ago. Fox wasn't ranked two years ago.

The broad categories considered for the rankings were alumni career progress, idea generation and diversity.

From Business Journal
Wharton Ranks 1st in MBA Programs for Third Year
Jan 31, 2006 11:58 a.m.

NEW YORK -- Five universities in Ohio and Pennsylvania are ranked in the 2006 Global MBA Rankings list of business schools published by the Financial Times. The ranking evaluates full-time Masters in Business Administration programs from the world's top business schools.

This year's survey results indicate that the full-time MBA program will once again establish itself as the degree of choice among the world's business elite. Those graduating from top programs are commanding higher salaries than any MBA graduates in the past decade and the fall in applicants has slowed, officials said.

This year, the rankings show that the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania has maintained its title as the world's No. 1 business school for the third year in a row. Harvard University, who shared the No. 1 spot with the Wharton school last year having regained this title after four years, slipped back into second place. Trailing closely behind within the top five are Stanford University GSB, Columbia Business School, and London Business School.

In total this year's top 100 global business schools includes 57 U.S. schools, 27 European, seven Canadian, two from Australia, two from China, and three from Central and South America. Singapore and South Africa are also represented.

In addition to the Wharton school, Carnegie Mellon's Tepper College ranks 41st, down from 32nd on last year's list. Also in Pennsylvania, Penn State University's Smeal College ranks 42nd (55th last year). In Ohio, Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead school is 63rd (down from 49th in 2005) and The Ohio State University's Fisher College is 72nd (60th last year).

I am so happy that I decided to attend Instituto de Empresa in Madrid over a British university. They must have one of the highest ranking increase in the last few years.

Dave, I've been following your blog since August last year and must complement you. Your blog has become a comprehensive guide to MBA program applications in general and has greatly helped me in my applications. However, I've always noticed that your school choice, application status details have been missing. Sincerely hope you heard/will hear good news in your application pursuit. - A well wisher

Good point. I'd like to post more about my situation, but I'm keeping things under wraps for now. Thanks for the concern.
